February is not only a time to celebrate and show appreciation for our sweethearts, it’s also a time to remind
ourselves of the importance of our actual hearts. As we take time to recognize American Heart Month, it’s imperative that we remember just how much maintenance and care the most important muscle in our body really needs.
Heart disease and stroke kill 1 in 3 American women – more than all cancers combined. With that said, 80% of heart disease is preventable through diet and exercise. It’s truly as simple as making a choice to dedicate yourself to healthier living. Below are 5 tips to improve your heart health.
1. Start exercising or increase the frequency in which you exercise: This could be a block of time that you designate in your schedule for a daily long walk, or simply making a point to incorporate more activity in your daily routine. For example, taking the stairs instead of an elevator when possible.
2. Introduce more fruits and vegetables into your diet. Mixing fruits and veggies into your daily snack routine is an excellent way to ensure you’re getting necessary nutrients, and they can take the place of the less-healthy options we usually choose in the name of convenience. Apples, peaches, as well as certain berries and melons are all great sources of the nutrients that can lower cholesterol and blood pressure – which, in turn, can also help you lose weight.
3. Get more sleep. Obviously, the amount of sleep an individual needs to feel rested varies from person to person, but experts say the average is about seven hours for most of us. More sleep, of course, means less stress, and more energy during the day to deal with the curveballs life is waiting to throw us.
4. Check your cholesterol level: Taking the necessary steps to lower your cholesterol is one thing. It’s just as important, however to keep up with your progress! Try starting a health diary to make notes and keep track of your cholesterol levels from each doctor visit, so you can have a good idea of the impact of the improvements you are making in your overall health regimen.
5. Develop a heart health plan with your doctor. Who better than a medical expert to set you on the right path to a healthy heart! A good physician should be able to give you even more guidance and help you tailor a plan specifically for your lifestyle and needs.
Again, the ball is in your court. However you decide to approach your health plan is entirely up to you, but the most important thing is that you make a concerted effort to keep your ticker in tip-top condition. After all, the best gift you can give your loved ones isn’t flowers, candy or anything material. It’s being there to share the beautiful moments life has to offer.
