\"michellepolaroid2\"<\/a>In a perfect world, people would always be nice to us. They\u2019d always be understanding and accepting of our choices and circumstances, and would never waiver in their support of what we want. <\/span><\/p>\n

But of course, we don\u2019t live in a perfect world. We\u2019re subject to the criticisms and judgement of those around us, be they verbal or nonverbal, intentionally hurtful or simply clumsily worded. Case in point \u2013 as naturalistas, many of us can attest to hearing less-than-flattering things during our natural hair journey. It\u2019s one thing when we hear it from co-workers or acquaintances or even strangers; when the source is our own family and friends, it can be a lot to deal with.<\/span><\/p>\n

Michelle Holmes will tell you that by all accounts, her natural hair journey wasn\u2019t really noteworthy in any way. There was no big chop or large hair crisis to solve for \u2013 she simply made the choice to go natural based on what she felt was best for her hair and its health.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy hair just did not respond well to relaxers,\u201d Michelle explained. \u201cRelaxers caused my hair to thin out terribly.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As an alternative, Michelle began wearing her hair in braids and other protective styles, eventually phasing out perms altogether. She immediately noticed thicker, healthier hair.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI eventually transitioned through my braids,\u201d Michelle recounted. \u201cWhat I found interesting with my hair is that after three to four weeks of transitioning, my hair seemed as though it was chemical free. My hair reverted back to natural pretty quickly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

After a while, Michelle became comfortable enough with her hair to simply wear it in its natural state. Of course, as is usually the case, it takes time to find the right products to achieve the right look. Michelle tried it all with mixed results \u2013 then came a recommendation from her cousin about a line called Uncle Funky\u2019s Daughter.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy cousin introduced me to UFD, and I have subsequently introduced my mother and one of my other cousins to Uncle Funky\u2019s Daughter,” Michelle revealed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before she could spread the word to her family and friends about the wonders of UFD, however, she had trouble convincing them that going natural was the right move for her.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes, your family members and loved ones can be particularly judgmental about our hair journeys, especially older relatives. My mother gave me grief\u00a0for about two to three years after I transitioned,\u201d Michelle said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut when she realized how healthy and well-off my hair hair was, she decided that she wanted\u00a0to go natural as well,\u201d Michelle continued. \u201cI introduced her to the product about 6 months ago, and she loves it!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
