It’s flattering to get a compliment on occasion from friends, your significant other or even a\u00a0stranger. But when your mom gives you a compliment, it has a different, more la\"Polaroid-Kerri-and-mom\"<\/a>sting effect. One\u00a0of our most loyal Funky Junkies can attest to this truth.<\/p>\n

Five years ago, Funky Junky Kerri Swain, a Houstonian and naturalista, washed her hair after a\u00a0workout. For convenience and ease, she decided to let her hair air dry \u2013 something she did\u00a0seldomly. That same day, her mother visited her and to Kerri\u2019s surprise, she immediately\u00a0complimented Kerri on how beautiful her natural curls were.<\/p>\n

Kerri had been toying with the idea of going natural. So, her mother\u2019s positive words were\u00a0confirmation that going natural was the right move. Having recently joined a fitness boot camp,\u00a0she exercised three to four times a week. This workout routine made it difficult to maintain her\u00a0relaxed styled hair. \u201cI needed a hairstyle that would complement my new lifestyle,\u201d said Kerri.\u00a0Going natural was a perfect fit.<\/p>\n

Deciding to go natural for Kerri was step one. Step two was finding the right products for her\u00a0natural hair, a rite of passage for all naturalistas. However, a fortuitous request from a relative\u00a0introduced her to Uncle Funky\u2019s Daughter. Kerri\u2019s cousin asked her to visit the salon in Rice\u00a0Village to purchase products on her behalf. While at the Uncle Funky’s Daughter salon, Kerri\u00a0decided to pick up a few of their products to try as well. To her delight, she loved how her\u00a0tresses responded to Uncle Funky\u2019s Daughter products, sparking the beginning of a natural hair\u00a0love affair. From there, Kerri began her natural hair journey, and Uncle Funky\u2019s Daughter\u00a0products would be there every step of the way.<\/p>\n

The next stage in her journey was deciding her transition path. \u201cHow exactly am I going to go\u00a0natural when my hair has been relaxed for so long?\u201d Kerri asked herself. She decided to use the\u00a0Wash \u00adn’ \u00adGo method, washing her hair everyday with Uncle Funky\u2019s Daughter products and\u00a0allowing her hair to air dry. Six weeks later, she discovered that she had nearly an inch of new\u00a0growth, so it was time for the \u201cBig Chop.\u201d \u201cI went to the salon the next day, and my stylist cut it\u00a0off…though he was not pleased with my decision to go natural,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Despite some naysayers, Kerri insists going natural was the best decision she has ever made.\u00a0\u201cGoing natural allowed me to workout whenever I wanted to, without worrying about what to do\u00a0with my hair. It has also reduced my morning hair routine.\u201d said Kerri. \u201cGoing natural has set me free!.”<\/p>\n

\"Kerri's_Faves\"Five years after finding Uncle Funky\u2019s Daughter products, the love affair continues with Kerri\u00a0using Uncle Funky\u2019s Daughter products in her morning and nightly routine. Now flaunting a\u00a0\u201cfro\u00adhawk\u201d (a short and curly afro styled as a mohawk), she uses Midnite Train and Supercurl\u00a0after washing and then allows her hair to air dry. In the morning, she uses Thirsty Curls, Midnite\u00a0Train and Extra Butter. Extra Butter is her favorite product because of its ability to define her curls.<\/p>\n

Kerri continues to voice her gratitude towards Uncle Funky\u2019s Daughter for taking this journey\u00a0with her. She has discovered a lot about herself and her hair through this journey.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith Uncle\u00a0Funky\u2019s Daughter [online hair quiz], I was able to discover that I have to two different hair types\u00a0(Type 3c and 4a),\u201d said Kerri. \u201cI have also discovered that I can be a little particular when it\u00a0comes to a stylist styling my hair.\u201d<\/p>\n

In fact, her most recent obstacle has been finding a stylist to maintain her short look while not\u00a0losing her femininity. Although Kerri believes that going natural was the best decision she has\u00a0ever made, the transition wasn’t always an easy one. She relates to other women who are\u00a0experiencing challenges in their natural hair journey and says, \u201cDon\u2019t give up too soon when\u00a0becoming natural, the light is at the end of the tunnel. Be patient, and you will get to it.\u201d<\/p>\n
