There are so many protective styles out there to choose from. Experiences with protective styles can be very different depending on the person and their lifestyle. Here are some tips on how to choose a protective style that fits your lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"How<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Low manipulation protective styles.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you are the type who likes to get their hair done and leave it in for a few weeks, wash and go\u2019s once a week is not the move for you. You are probably better suited for a braided or twisted style that you don\u2019t need to touch up throughout the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to professional dancing and owning my own fitness business, keeping my hair protected is an absolute MUST. I\u2019m sweating almost daily. Now don\u2019t get me wrong, sweating is actually great for your hair because it increases blood circulation to the scalp – hence promoting hair growth. But the downside is that some styles don\u2019t last as long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s why braids, twists, and faux locs are my go-to when it comes to protective styling. Between rehearsals, classes, and meetings, these styles are versatile, easy to maintain, and require little to no manipulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For added length or volume.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some may consider micro links and tape-in extensions to be protective styles! They can be, depending on how you maintain them. It’s important, to be honest with yourself when choosing a protective style. If you don\u2019t have the capacity to care for micro links or tape-in extensions, then I don\u2019t recommend them to you. However, if you just want a little more length or volume, go for it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I like micro links and tape-ins because I get bored easily and it allows me to be versatile<\/a> with my hairstyles. However, that\u2019s not always the best when I\u2019m trying to actually protect my hair and manipulate it less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"How<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Choose the right products for maintenance.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In addition to choosing the right style, having the right products can make or break your protective style. My must-have for braids, twists, and locs is Defunk<\/a> Refresher Tonic by Uncle Funky\u2019s Daughter. It removes any odors and buildup from sweating. I also love Midnight Train<\/a> for an extra boost of moisture, and if I want to fight frizz and add shine I\u2019ll spray Glossy<\/a> on my hair. These products are also very easy to travel with so that you are ready for whatever the day throws at you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In conclusion, when choosing your protective style consider your lifestyle, the time you are actually going to put into maintaining it, and your personal preference. It may not be what is traditionally considered protective but it will certainly suit you and your goals for your hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
