Many women often dream about traveling solo but are unsure about the safety of traveling alone or where to go. Traveling solo as a Black woman is often one of the best times you can experience. No matter where you come from, solo travel is something I recommend for everyone because you learn so much about yourself! Just remember these 5 travel tips if you are a Black woman traveling solo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Travel Local<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you are new to traveling alone as a black woman<\/a>, I recommend starting out small first! This looks like taking yourself out to eat alone, visiting surrounding domestic cities by yourself, and traveling to different states alone. I used to do this all the time before making my first international solo trip, and it allowed me to build up confidence in navigating the world alone. In addition, your first solo trip may be visiting a country not too far away from your home base. For people in the US, this can be traveling to Mexico<\/a>, the Caribbean, or South America. This will allow you to learn more about the type of traveler you are and ease some of your anxiety before making a huge solo trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Do Your Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You can never be over-prepared when traveling alone. Be sure to conduct a thorough research about the places you visit. This includes crime rates, weather, other solo travel experiences in the area, things to do, nightlife, and anything else you can think of. I recommend watching YouTube videos to get an authentic feel for a destination you want to see in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Talk to Strangers \u2013 Just Don\u2019t Overshare<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Other countries tend to be much safer and more welcoming compared to the United States. Always be alert to your surroundings but remember that not every stranger you meet is trying to kidnap you. Never give away too much information. Use your own judgment when talking to strangers to discern what information to share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For instance, I usually don\u2019t let strangers know that I am traveling alone. I typically say I will meet someone so they know people expect me. If they ask where you are staying, never give them the name of the hotel. And my number one rule is to never update your social media in real-time. On the bright side, you can get the best details and scoops when talking to strangers! They will provide the best recommendations for food, restaurants, activities, and so much more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Download Offline Maps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It is essential to download offline maps when traveling solo because offline maps will direct you to your destination, even if your internet connection is sluggish or nonexistent. Anytime I am international, or in an area with limited internet, such as the outdoors for hiking, I download multiple map options before I leave. You won\u2019t need to spend extra money on data roaming fees, and all of the map\u2019s details are already stored on your device, so you do not have to wait for the map to load when you search for a place or need directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Carry Travel Essentials With You<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Without thorough planning, traveling can be stressful and unpredictable. Make sure you have everything you need when traveling and that you don\u2019t forget essential items<\/a>. Always pack based on where you\u2019re traveling, taking into account cultural customs, weather, and any other location-specific norms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
