What Is Juneteenth and Why It Matters Today.

Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19th, marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved Black people were free — over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

This historic moment symbolizes the true end of slavery in the United States and has grown into a national celebration of Black freedom, culture, and resilience.

That day became Juneteenth — a blend of “June” and “nineteenth”— and marked a long-awaited turning point in American history.

From humble beginnings of church gatherings and community meals, Juneteenth evolved into an annual tradition of celebrating Black resilience, unity, and cultural pride.
