I don’t know if you are in the same boat, but because of Covid-19, my husband’s trips to the barber have become fewer and less frequent. As a result, his hair is growing. What once used to be a low cut is now a cute, curly afro. Don’t get me wrong, I actually love his new hair and I’ve been encouraging him to keep it and grow it out. He’s also been getting a lot of compliments and praise from friends and family, which is a great self-confidence boost!
But…now that his hair has grown out, he’s now using more of MY products!

Are you ladies experiencing the same thing? If so, let him embrace his curls and rock that short afro. Men also want their own hair care regimen and self-care routine so they can look sharp and be sharp…even if it is at home!
If you are going through the same experience…or think you may be on the brink of it…here are my top 3 tips to support your man as he reaches on your side of the bathroom counter:
- Show him the right products for his hair type and (subtly) show him how to correctly use them. Milton actually asked me what he should use on his hair when it started getting longer, and I recommended Extra Butter. When Milton first started using Extra Butter, I often told him: “a little goes a long way” and “just rub it through your hair with your fingers” so he wouldn’t just grab a large glob and rub it on top of his hair. LOL

- Follow up your lesson with words of affirmation to boost his ego and confidence. Then plant the seed for family and friends to compliment him as he sports his new look on Zoom, Facetime, and Google Meets calls (or whatever virtual format is the preferred method). If your man is anything like mine, he needs a little ego stroke when he makes a change, so give him what he needs ladies! (It will also pay off for you later. :))
- Get him his own stuff! When Milton started growing out his hair, we were sharing the same products. Slowly, my products became his, so I decided to buy him his own set. This was in part for him…and in part for me. (My stuff IS my stuff!) Besides, men are taking more of a leadership role in their personal grooming, doing their own research and buying their own products. So, getting him his own set supports your confidence in his choice of growing out those beautiful curls.

His go-to everyday stylers are Midnite train and Extra Butter. He loves combining these two products because they define his curls and add moisture to his hair. As for his wash day routine, he uses the same products as I do to shampoo and condition in the shower: Squeaky (His favorite! He always asks for a new one when we run out) and Richee Rich. He’s a guy, so he naturally keeps it simple when it comes to his hair care routine!
