Summer is officially here which means fun in the sun! Whether at the pool, beach or backyard bbq, it’s important to protect your hair from the harmful effects of Summer. Chlorine, salt water and extreme heat can cause breakage, dryness and even heat damage. Here are some ways I like to protect my hair while still having fun during the hot summer months.

- 1- Deep condition.
When planning to swim at a pool or beach, protect your hair from chlorine and salt water by soaking it with tap water. Then apply deep conditioner. I love using Uncle Funky’s Daughter Heal and Renew because it contains ingredients like argan oil, peppermint oil and organic aloe vera juice and my hair always feels revived after I use it. Hair saturated with clean water and deep conditioner won’t soak up as much chlorine or salt water. Plus, the deep conditioner will keep your hair hydrated and protected. Once you finish your swim, be sure to rinse your hair as chlorine and salt can cause dryness and even damage over time.
- 2- Cowash your hair.
When your hair is dry from the Summer’s heat, the last thing you want to do is further strip your hair with shampoo. Instead, wash your hair with conditioner (a.k.a. co-wash) or use a cream cleanser to make sure you add moisture rather than take it away. I love using Uncle Funky’s Daughter Bye-Bye Build Up cleansing conditioner to co-wash.
- 3- Wear a hat.
If your summer activities include being out in the sun for hours, wear a hat or scarf to protect your hair from the sun’s heat and harmful rays. Try wrapping your hair in a turban when going to the beach. You’ll look stylish while keeping your hair safe. Win/Win!

- 4- Wear protective hairstyles.
Protective hairstyles are perfect for the Summer because they keep your hair out of your face. Side twists, a crown braid or bantu knots are great options. When styling, apply hair products containing shea butter or sesame oil which have natural UV filtering properties for extra protection from the sun.
- 5- Stay hydrated!
Remember to stay hydrated both inside and out. Health starts from within, so be sure to drink plenty of water to make sure your skin and hair stay healthy too. Try adding fresh fruit to a glass mason jar and pouring ice cold water over them for a more fun way to sip water throughout the day.
I hope you find these tips useful and keep your hair healthy and hydrated all summer long!
