The Fall is my favorite time of year! The leaves are changing, it gets cooler in Houston, and I get to sport my boots and sweaters. It also kicks off the season of celebrating holidays as we close out the year — from Halloween to Christmas. Costumes, house decorations, candy, gifts…what’s not to love?

Every year, I try to convince my family to dress up as a theme on Halloween. Last year, we were The Incredibles. As my kids get older, it’s getting more and more difficult to have the whole family agree to dress up as a theme. I was able to get everyone to agree to all dress up as a scary character from a movie of their choice. My husband will be Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Guy will dress as Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th), Harris picked Pennywise (IT), Emma picked a zombie cheerleader (who knows what movie!) and baby Laura picked a zombie (you pick any movie you want!)…and I picked Carrie (Carrie). Look out for our Halloween costume pictures on my Instagram page @lifebyrenee!

Usually for Halloween, our neighborhood plans a Halloween gathering where we have pizza in the front of someone’s yard and we all go trick or treating. We’ll still have the Halloween gathering since it’s outdoors and we will all be socially distant. This year we will go trick or treating as a family (instead of as a large group with neighbors). My rationale for allowing my kids to trick or treat is:
- my kids will be wearing masks while trick or treating
- they will be socially distant while trick-or-treating
- they will vigorously wash their hands once they get home and before they eat any candy
For our house, we decided we won’t personally hand out candy. I have this Halloween decor of a witch holding a bowl. I will stuff the bowl with individually wrapped bags of candy and turn on the light so that kids know they can trick or treat at our house. And all I’ll have to do is replenish that bowl when it runs out of bags.

It’s really fun to celebrate the Holidays with the family…especially when you have young children like we do. I know this year will be different, but we will do our best to celebrate these Holidays while being cautious and socially distant. What are you doing this Halloween?
