It’s that time of the year again ladies, when it’s starting to get warmer and the weather is changing in a beautiful way. I always love to give my hair extra love this time of the year because you can take advantage of the perfect weather and style your hair exactly how you’d like it.

- Trim. The first thing I do to start my haircare transition is to get a trim, either at a salon or I do it myself at home. Because most of us have sported a series of protective hairstyles throughout the Winter months which may not require a lot of trimming, by now we know that our hair is desperately in need of a GOOD trim. I am often asked “How do you know what deep up the hair shaft should I trim?” For me, I can tell that my hair needs trimming when it starts to thin out on the ends. The thin part that sticks out once you braid or two-strand twist your hair is the part you should trim. Those ends of your hair are usually splitting and prone to dryness and breakage, so it’s better to trim your hair to help it grow faster and healthier.
- Scalp Care. Another thing I recommend doing is to take care of your scalp. Similar to your skin, your hair and scalp have survived through the dry cold months without lots of moisture. So what you should do is bring moisture back to your scalp by giving yourself a moisture treatment using a deep conditioner and a hot oil treatment. Be sure to massage those products into your scalp thoroughly when applying them to create stimulation. For my hot oil treatment, I love using Shining Star. I warm it up and apply it onto my scalp, then I follow up with my favorite deep conditioner — Heal & Renew. I also recommend to deep clean your scalp before deep conditioning to remove product buildup and dandruff with a clarifying cleanser. For my BIG wash day, I start with Squeaky then follow up with Rich & Funky Moisturizing Shampoo to get my scalp clean and ready for my deep conditioning treatments. I usually give my hair this amazing in-depth haircare routine whenever I’m coming out of a braid-out or transitioning from one style into another big style, because I know I haven’t touched my hair in a while.
- Let Loose. Even though sometimes I switch to protective styles, summertime is my time to rock my wash and gos. They’re easy to maintain and last a long time. I also love to use my Defunk to extend the life of my wash & go, especially in Summer when (like everyone else) I try to get back in shape and I work out a lot. Defunk is the perfect product for your hair when you are exploring many styles in the warmer weather and also when traveling. So don’t forget to take one along with you on your vacation.

When it comes to styling hair, the same rules apply to children, especially to your daughters. Children are constantly playing, sweating, and accumulating dirt in their hair. As you know, I have three girls, so when transitioning my daughters’ hairstyles, I tend to go for a more protective style like braids in the summer. They are swimming, playing and all around sweating more. So, I tend to hydrate my daughters’ hair as much as I can in the summer by conditioning often and even co-washing after swimming…or grabbing Defunk when I am in a hurry.
I hope my tips to transition your hair from Winter to Spring & Summer are helpful to you all! I swear by this hair care regimen and I’m sure that this routine will prepare your hair for good Summer hair days. 🙂
