Candy and Costumes and COVID, OH MY! The spookiest night of the year is right around the corner, and with COVID-19 remaining prominent in many of our communities, we have to take extra precautions. Regardless of if you’re a thrill-seeker and plan to be out and about. Or a homebody and prefer a small gathering. You can enjoy every second of Halloween while remaining vigilant.
It’s been years since I’ve been able to dress up in a costume and party, so my brain is loaded with tons of ideas. I’ll more than likely skip this year’s outside festivities and celebrate at home, but we’re dressing up. I love recreating iconic looks from old movies or TV shows. This year I’ve decided to dig deep and find my inner “New New” from one of my favorite movies, “ATL.”

If you’re still undecided on your plans, I’m thrilled to share a few tips on how you can celebrate Halloween in a COVID-friendly way.
If you’re a homebody like me, you may opt to stay home while everyone is out trick or treating. Here are 4 ways to celebrate Halloween in the comfort of your own home.
- Host a virtual Halloween party – Invite a few of your friends/family and host a virtual party using one of the many video-conference programs available for free! Have a costume contest, play games, share spooky stories, or have a dance contest.
- Turn your home into a haunted house – Order supplies online and turn your home into the spookiest house on the block. Or make it into a contest and have each family member decorate their room. The best room wins.
- Have a family movie marathon – Who doesn’t love a good marathon? Make a list of your favorite fall/scary movies, grab your snacks and relax.
- Pumpkin Carving Contest – If you’re feeling crafty, go all out and carve those seasonal pumpkins.

For those who have decided to get out of the house or hand out candy to the neighborhood kids:
- Make social distancing costumes – Incorporate your costumes into social distancing costumes, try Pac-Man, gigantic bubbles, or maybe a UFO.
- Find a way to safely deliver candy/treats – Make candy bags beforehand so that each child only touches one at a time.
- Visit a pumpkin patch – Since these are typically in an outdoor setting, there will be plenty of room for social distance.
- Last but not least, wear your masks, sanitize your hands, and try your best to stay six feet apart.
Granted, we may not be ready to celebrate this holiday as carefree as we once did. But, I hope my tips give you exciting ideas!
Happy Spooky Season!
