Hey Funky Junkies! With the weather changing, we are spending our time planning all of these fun fall festivities, but we have to take note of the drier air and how it affects our curls. Here are three ways to get scary good, moisturized hair during the Fall.
1. Double down on deep conditioners.
Retaining moisture is always a little more difficult as the weather gets cooler. That’s why I recommend you double down on your deep conditioners. Every wash day, I deep condition with Heal & Renew, and I follow up with a moisturizing conditioner such as Richee Rich. This double conditioning routine is a great tip I got from one of our Foxy Mamas during a Chatbox episode. I found that this method maximizes the moisture in my curls so that it is better prepared to withstand the cooler climate.
As you all know, I’m a lazy natural. As a mother of 4 and a business owner, I am always busy and I don’t have 20 minutes to spare under the hairdryer for a proper deep condition. Instead, I apply my deep conditioner in the shower and let the steam help to serve as my hairdryer. For my second layer of moisturizing conditioner, I will put it on after the shower and let it sit while I am walking around. However, if you have the time, I recommend letting your deep conditioner seep into your hair by sitting under the dryer to lock that moisture in!
2. Increase the volume of your crème and leave-ins.
The more moisture, the better…especially during Fall and Winter months! I find that when I increase the frequency of my moisturizer application, my curls stay more defined and manageable!
On those days when I need extra moisture, I swap out a lighter leave-in spray such as Midnite Train for a slightly heavier leave-in spray like Thirsty Curls. That extra layer of product is what I need to retain moisture throughout the day. If your go-to product is not too heavy, I recommend increasing the volume or amount that you use when you are prepping your hair at night. For example, I add more Extra Butter to my hair when I am doing my chunky twists at night. I also often add Shining Star into my creme or butter to give my hair extra moisture during the Fall.
Increasing the amount of moisturizer you use at night will save you time on having to retouch throughout the day as the dryness in the air ramps up the need for more moisture. Side note: Don’t forget your bonnet at night! You REALLY need to be diligent about protecting your hair at night during these colder months when you are running your heat at night!

3. Don’t forget about your oils!
Make sure that you increase the frequency of your hot oil treatments as well! Shining Star is an excellent tool for your hot oil treatment. Simply warm up Shining Star in hot water to loosen the oils and apply from root to ends. Be sure to massage the oils into your scalp as well. MMMMM…feels so good!!!
Don’t be afraid to tap into our Thermal Line (other thermal protection products) during the colder months, even if you’re not heat styling as they provide a layer of protection and moisture during the Fall. A Split End Serum will come in handy as your hair may be more prone to damage if you’re NOT giving your strands increased love. You can also add our 3 in 1 Shine Booster to the ends of your hair for that extra shine and hydration.
I hope that these tips help your hair thrive during the holidays and that you achieve that scary good moisture your hair has been craving!
P.S. As many of you know we have been honoring survivors of Breast Cancer all month long. Breast Cancer impacts so many of us each day and we are doing what we can to help in the fight to end cancer. On our website we’ve been giving away products through our Buy, Get, Give campaign. Every purchase that you made throughout the month of October has gone to support a Breast Cancer Non-Profit in the U.S. We’ve also given a platform for a few Breast Cancer Survivors to tell their story.
