Thanksgiving is here, and we are kicking off food preparation and family events. Most of us want our hair to look flawless during this time, but it doesn’t always work out that way. Here are a few ways to rescue your curls in a crisis and still have a great time this holiday season!
Pull it back.
If you’ve been in a situation where your flexi rod or twist out didn’t turn out as planned, the easiest way to rescue your curls during such a crisis would be to put them up! Whether that is a bun, a puff, or a slick back ponytail, grab your favorite butter and gel (I use Extra Butter and Curly Magic) and pull your hair back. Slick down those edges, lay them down with a scarf, and you are good to go!
One night for a party, my wash and go was a “no go” (LOL!) so I braided my hair back into cornrows and added a ponytail to the back, and BOOM! … New Look! Check out my 70s party look below with my braided hair and ponytail look…

Embrace the volume.
During this time of year, we are all busy running around trying to get things done, which might cause us to skip steps during our styling process. For example, last week I did a Flexi rod set, and upon taking them out, I realized that I did not allow enough time for my hair to dry. My hair was still wet at the roots… In this instance, I separated the ends and rocked a curly fro for the day! But, it wasn’t the first time. I did something similar for a wedding (yes…I know better!) It dried a little bit more for the wedding, but it was still not dry all the way. I still rocked it! I put some lipstick on and a great makeup…combined with a nice dress…and people thought I looked great. (Even though I was still self-conscious about it.)
Here is a pic from the wedding where my flexi rod wasn’t quite on point like I wanted it to be for the wedding…

So, don’t be afraid to embrace what you have! Confidence…great makeup and outfit…can go a LONG way! 🙂
Rock a wig.
If you have a wig, put it on! A wig is the quickest way to rescue your curls during a crisis. This tip is very useful during the holiday season! You may have been prepping for Thanksgiving dinner all day and realized (last minute) that your hair is not very presentable. Or maybe your curls just didn’t come out the way you wanted them to. There’s no shame in slicking your hair under a cap and rocking that wig.
Bonus Tip: Rescue Your SELF.

As a mom of 4, I can relate to prioritizing my kids and neglecting my self-care routine. I’m learning to take time for myself, especially in regards to my appearance. Many of you know that I have been on a mission to improve my health and make more time for “me”…which is easier said than done. Many articles out there will tell you that you shouldn’t need to schedule your self-care time. BUT…I disagree. You need to schedule it until it becomes a habit. So, don’t be afraid to schedule time for yourself. Eventually, it WILL become part of the fabric of your everyday life.
One lesson I have learned in my hair care fiascos is this…make sure to block some time to do your hair the day (or night) before your holiday gathering. This will ensure you have given your hair the appropriate time to “set” (aka dry). The next day you will feel good and confident in your appearance.
I hope that these tips help you rescue your curls in a crisis and you are armed for your next holiday party! The key thing in all of this is to remember…only YOU know how you wanted your hair to look for the party. So, just go with it and create the NEW look for the party, and have a blast!
Happy Thanksgiving Funky Junkies!
