Hey curly girls! I am beyond excited to share some curly hair care goodness! Here are a few simple yet important hair care tips that I share with all of my clients.
Tip #1: Do not over-shampoo!
I always recommend not over-shampooing. I know it sounds so taboo not to wash your hair every day but there is so much truth in those few little words. Depending on your curl type and with a good quality shampoo and conditioner you should be able to go a few days without shampooing. When we over-shampoo textured hair it eventually leads to breakage. Only washing your hair several times a week is not only good for your hair but it’s beneficial for your scalp – which brings us to tip #2.
Tip #2: Add scalp care to your routine.
Let’s talk about scalp care for a minute! This essential part of curly hair care gets overlooked far too often. I tell my clients to take clean, dry hands to their scalp daily and gently massage. When we do this it will loosen any dead skin cells, increase circulation and get that blood flowing. This technique helps stimulate hair growth! Just think about this.. we go for facials and one of the most important steps is exfoliation (think of all the great benefits and how it leaves our face glowing). So, why should it be any different when it comes to our scalp?

Tip #3: Get regular trims!
Regular trims are important to keep those curls healthy and gorgeous! I recommend a trim every few months if possible. Also, make sure to find a stylist that is familiar with cutting curly hair because no two curl patterns are alike!
Tip #4: Try a cool water rinse at the end of your wash!
I’m just going to say it… cool water rinse! Yikes, I know you might just have chills down your spine. I think it’s an important tip when it comes to reducing frizz in curly hair. After your last conditioner, I recommend briefly running cool water over your head for a final rinse. It helps close off the cuticle and it will leave your hair much more shiny and healthy-looking. This could be the game-changer if you find your curls tend to get frizzy.

Tip #5: Condition twice.
Double conditioner each time! This is also a great way to combat frizz and bring on that shine! Every time you wash your hair I recommend you condition it twice. I love to use a “thicker/heavier” conditioner first and follow up with a lighter conditioner. Also, don’t be so quick to rinse right away. Gently comb through the hair with a wide-toothed comb and let the conditioner sit for a while before rinsing.
Tip #6: Protect your hair at night!
Let’s talk about the final part of our day; when it’s time to lay our heads down for the night. Since we aren’t washing our hair every day this is key to keeping those curls in a beautiful pattern. I always recommend a silk pillowcase. It helps reduce friction as we move our heads around during the night. Depending on the texture of your hair, do a loose side braid…or better yet…gently place your hair on the top of your head in a wrap or hair scarf each night. You will be shocked at what a difference this tip can do for the next day!
I hope these curly hair care tips help your curls shine in the best possible way!
