The real estate industry is so lucrative, especially in Houston. As a woman in this industry, it’s important to show up confident, knowledgeable, and professional. Here are a few beginner-friendly tips for women in real estate.
Getting started in real estate.
Real estate is not a difficult industry to get into. The first step in the process is to get your license. I got my real estate license online at Real Estate Express but do your research and find a school that works best for you. Once I got my license, I found a good broker to join so that I could start selling properties. I definitely recommend finding a broker that will provide you with real estate training. That way you can learn a lot about the industry as you go.
Sometimes it can be challenging being a Black woman in a predominantly white industry. If you are a minority, try not to worry about it too much. Over the years I’ve learned that when you accept who you are, show up confident and knowledgeable about your business, you can go very far in this industry.

A professional appearance matters!
Appearance plays a huge role in the real estate industry. If you look good, you feel good and you show up as your best self! You never know who you might meet and first impressions play a big part in whether or not you win a client. I always dress professionally and that includes having my hair styled in a professional manner. I would suggest sticking with a few go-to styles that last all week. I personally love to browse through YouTube videos to find cute professional looks. I also understand that styling your hair can be a very time-consuming process. So typically, I wash on Sundays and decide how I’ll be wearing my hair for the week. This will allow you to be on the move and not have to worry about your hair every day!
I like to wear braid-outs and twist-outs in order to look and feel professional. On Sundays, I deep condition my hair and style with Thirsty Curls and Curly Magic to get a defined twist-out or braid-out. I also really love Uncle Funky’s Daughter’s new Maximum Thermal Protection line. Whenever I want to blow out my hair before a twist out, I use their Primer, Split End Serum, and 3 in 1 Shine Booster to protect my hair from the heat and get bouncy, healthy-looking curls!
At the end of the day, remember that professionalism isn’t based on race, gender, or your hair texture! Show up with confidence, lots of knowledge, and be the best real estate agent you can be!
