I’m originally from Puerto Rico and I’ve been a curly girl for 4 years now! My curls have a mixed curl pattern like a lot of my Hispanic counterparts! Throughout my journey, I’ve had many ups and downs and learned a few things along the way. Today I’m going to share with you 3 common mistakes I’ve made when styling my hair and how I fixed them!
Mistake 1: Not using enough water.
For a while, I had trouble retaining moisture in my natural curls. I couldn’t understand why it would dry out so quickly even after applying the product! I then received some great advice from a hairstylist that I never considered. The greatest source of moisture for curly hair is water so the goal is to lock in as much as possible! Instead of applying the product to damp hair, I style my hair in the shower when it is soaking wet. Immediately after applying this technique, I noticed that it not only reduced frizz but my hair was retaining moisture.
Mistake 2: Choosing the wrong product combination.
The products you use on your curls play a key role in how your hair behaves. I’ve used products in the past that did not have the ingredients my hair needs. I started off my hair journey with a lot of dryness and frizz because I didn’t know what products to use. A great way to start is with a good conditioner and hair mask! A combination that surprised me a lot was applying Heal & Renew and Richee Rich. I know, a hair mask AND conditioner seems intense but believe me it leaves my hair extra shiny and bouncy! I always get the softest curls when using this method.
Currently, my hair is frizz free after using my power duo, Good Hair and Curly Magic from Uncle Funky’s Daughter! This combination always gives me bouncy, defined, and beautiful curls that last for days. It works every time! I especially love Curly Magic which is a gel that helps with definition and shine in my curls. It’s my favorite because it helps me control frizz, my hair isn’t dry or crunchy and my curls last a long time. Remember, a little goes a long way! These products are very concentrated and if you use too much you may have residue or a thick cast on your hair.
Mistake 3: Not maintaining my hair during the week.
Even though you used a great product combination at the beginning of the week, you still have to maintain your hair if you want it to look fresh! For example, I don’t even touch my hair without using oil. The oil creates a barrier between the hands and the hair resulting in less friction. When my hair is fully dry, I apply some Shining Star and shake my mane. Yes, SHAKE my mane! I also like to separate big curl clumps and break any gel cast with the hair oil.
To refresh my curls between wash days, I like to add Defunk which gives extra life to my curls. I finish it off by scrunching Curly Magic into my curls to add additional hold. This is how I avoid “bad hair days,” so that I can always feel beautiful in my crown!
