Hey Curlfriends! Fall is amongst us and I know a lot of us are finally pulling out the flat irons and blow dryers. When heat styling, how you treat your hair afterward is just as important as how you prep beforehand. Having a good healthy hair routine will not only allow you to enjoy your heat-styled hair more often but prevent you from regretting it afterward. When you’re ready to get back to your curls, you’ll be left with healthy coils as if they never left!

Properly maintain your heat style to avoid damage.
After heat styling, proper maintenance is important if you want your curls to bounce back every time. Put the flat irons AWAY and avoid touch-ups at all costs after getting your hair straightened. You will get the urge to fix those few frizzy pieces in the front, but trust me if you continue to put heat on your hair you will notice your curl pattern getting loose over time. Instead, switch it up and add some Flexi rods, or braids to your straight hair to make it last until wash day. Also, be mindful of the temperature you are using when flat ironing or blow drying. If you aren’t doing it yourself, let your stylist know your curly hair routine and that you value the health of your curls. Don’t be afraid to speak up!

Always start with a good cleanse.
The first step to transition from heat-styled hair to hydrated curls with ease is a good squeaky clean. The Purifying Cleanser from the Maximum Thermal Protection (MTP) collection is great for before and after heat styling. You want to make sure any buildup or oils from your heat style is removed from your hair. As you begin to shampoo you will notice that your curls are already coming back!
Next, you need to follow up with a good deep conditioner! The Heal & Renew Intensive Hair Masque or Deep Conditioner from the MTP collection are both good choices to put much-needed moisture back into your curls. Take it to the next level by adding heat to your treatment and sit under the dryer for 15-30 minutes. After cleansing, moisturizing, and strengthening your curls, they should bounce back with ease every time.

If you have heat damage, you can recover!
If you are currently recovering from heat damage, don’t feel like you have to avoid heat styles forever. Make changes to your routine and add some other styles into the rotation. Following these aftercare steps as well as protecting your hair beforehand, will make a huge difference. The Maximum Thermal Protection line is a great collection to keep on hand while you are recovering from damage. Your curls will thank you for sticking with a good before and after routine. You got this!
