What comes to mind when you think of summer? For me, it’s swimming pools, barbecues, and the smell of sunblock! Growing up in Texas means intense heat that will have you back home before noon. With intense summer heat and humidity comes natural hair challenges. In this article, I’m sharing summer natural hairstyling tips and tricks that will allow you to enjoy fun summer activities while keeping your curls looking cool!

Summer Prepping Tips
We all know that unprotected heat styling increases the chances of damaging your curls but did you know heat from the sun can be damaging as well? When your hair encounters heat it slightly raises the hair cuticle allowing moisture to leave the hair. This makes our hair more prone to breakage, frizz, and dryness which can be hard to manage. However, I learned that it’s all about the way you prep your hair before stepping out of the door!
Prepping your hair for a day out in the sun involves hydration and moisture. These terms are often used interchangeably but there are differences. Hydration involves pulling water from the air or environment into the hair. So, when you think of hydration think of humectants, such as water and aloe vera. Moisturizing involves locking in hydration so your hair stays moisturized – think oils and butters.
To prep my hair I apply Midnight Train by Uncle Funky’s Daughter and follow up with the Extra Butter Curl Forming Creme or the Supercurl Miracle Moisture Creme. This product combo contains ingredients known for easily penetrating the hair shaft, benefiting all porosity types.

Opt For Protective Styles
Protective styling is a method that’s perfect for every curl type and texture. Manipulating the hair too often can draw moisture away from the hair and expose it to the damaging effects of the environment.
Opting to leave your two strands in instead of taking them out is a simple way to retain moisture in between wash days. Other styles to incorporate this summer are braids, updos, and styles that allow you to tuck the ends of your hair away and avoid manipulation.
Also, keep in mind that just like your skin, your hair is affected by the sun’s UV rays. Wearing a cute wide-brimmed hat or head wrap are simple ways to keep your hair out of the sun. I suggest trying the Maximum Thermal Protection products from Uncle Funky’s Daughter to protect your hair from the sun’s UV rays.

Tips for Swimming
Worrying about damaging your natural hair after swimming is a thing of the past! All it takes is a little strategy. Before heading to your favorite swim spot, spray your hair with Midnite Train and place it under a swim cap or your favorite protective style. Just make sure to rinse your hair thoroughly after swimming and follow up with a moisturizing hair routine.
Dealing With Frizz
When you’re dealing with heat, sweat, and humidity, sometimes frizz is inevitable. However, having products that help keep the hair moisturized greatly reduces the amount of frizz. When dealing with frizz on the go, reach for your travel-sized Thirsty Curls and give your curls a spritz. For additional convenience keep a scrunchy or head wrap on hand to pull your hair up and off your neck so you can get back to having fun!
Caring for your natural hair should never stand in the way of you creating the best summer memories. Just remember to focus on your hair prep before leaving the house, choose the right protective style, create your own shade, use a leave-in before taking a swim, and refresh your style on the go with the Ultimate Kinky & Curly Travel Kit!
