After nearly ten years in the hair care industry, the trailblazing Houston-based Uncle Funky’s Daughter has refreshed their brand with a new look.
When the president, Renee Rhoten Morris, purchased the company last year, she wanted to reflect the company’s core values in its brand elements. As a naturalista for over 15 years, Morris explains her greatest challenge with transitioning was finding the right product and style that would help enhance the beauty of her natural hair.
“As a woman, I feel it is important for us to be at peace with our natural beauty,” Morris said, “Which is why I have centered our redesigned logo around the mandala flower — a spiritual symbol signifying balance, unity and harmony with mother nature.”
Morris continued, “For so many of us naturalistas, having wavy, curly, or coily hair requires an understanding of how to manage our curls and make them work for us. The mandala flower helps represent that by symbolizing the connection she makes with the natural state of her hair.”
Uncle Funky’s Daughter first came to the rescue of curls everywhere in 2009 with the popular Curly Magic Curl Stimulator, often referred to as “The Holy Grail” of hair gels. “Our goal is to create products that meet the needs of every curl pattern,” Morris said. In pursuit of that goal, Uncle Funky’s Daughter has created three “Perfect Wash-N-Go” systems based on specific curl patterns “to leave our ‘Funky Junkies’ with brilliant shine, moisture and curl definition,” according to Morris. Each set consists of Curly Magic, Thirsty Curls, and the option of one of the following moisturizing crèmes: Extra Butter, Supercurl or Good Hair. Each of these crèmes address the three main hair types: coily, curly and wavy, respectively.
Uncle Funky’s Daughter products are all-natural,100 percent free of paraben, silicone, sulfate, and mineral oil. To help consumers distinguish the purpose of these products, they are categorized into color families. Each color represents a special attribute of the mandala flower.
- Shampoos adorn orange curls and orange accents within the mandala flower, signifying transformation and self-awareness.
- Conditioners embellish teal curls and teal accents within the mandala flower, representing inner peace and meditation.
- Moisturizing Crèmes adorn green curls and green accents within the mandala flower, signifying physical healing.
- Curl Definers trim gold curls and gold accents within the mandala flower, promoting happiness, education and laughter.
Uncle Funky’s Daughter continues to grow, reaching natural curl friends globally. “Our Funky Junkies are excited about our new look, and I hope they will be equally thrilled about our upcoming products that benefit her,” said Morris.

New packaging looks sleek and cute. Hope they will stock the new packing at my local Juliette’s Beauty Supply soon.
MakeupVixen, They will have it in stock on their next reorder.
UFD had a salon in Houston…..where is it? I’m in H-town and I’d like to try some of the products…..
Our salon is currently closed. However, we are anticipating a Spring 2016 reopening! Stay tuned!!
I just tried placing an order through the app on my phone and it no longer works. Will this portal be updated so that it is usable again? I am a loyal customer from the NE but I’m hesitant to try since the rebranding “aka” sale. Have any of the formulas changed?
Michelle,
We are updating the app to reflect the current technology. No formulas have changed since the refresh of our brand. You may recall that we brought back the ORIGINAL formula of Curly Magic last fall. We look forward to seeing you back in the Funky Junky Family!!
