Recently, Haute Kinky Hair (HKH) teamed up with Uncle Funky’s Daughter for an amazing opportunity to test out their products on the HKH natural hair extensions. I wanted to take a moment to share with you a few tips on how you can use your Uncle Funky’s Daughter products on the HKH hair or any other natural hair extensions you may have.
Prepping the Wig Unit
Before wearing your wig unit, you need to wash, detangle, and condition the unit. A light, moisturizing shampoo such as Rich & Funky
Moisturizing Shampoo works well. I recommend detangling the hair while shampooing to make the hair more manageable. All HKH hair collections need to be conditioned to put moisture back into the hair after being washed. Richee Rich Moisturizing Conditioner is a great way to maintain that moisture. After placing the wig unit on a wig head, I recommend spraying the unit with Midnite Train Leave-in Conditioner and giving the hair unit a second round of detangling.
Preparing Your Hair for the Wig Unit
Just as you’ve prepped the wig unit, you need to prep your own hair. You want to shampoo and deep condition your own hair before applying your wig cap. A great conditioner is essential to healthy hair especially when protective styling. It helps put moisture back into the hair after being washed, and gives your hair added softness. Please ladies, NEVER skip out on conditioning your hair.
Styling the Hair
Using a wig head will make it easier for you to apply styling product to the hair to ensure even distribution. If you do not have a wig head, simply lay the hair flat on the counter to apply the product. In either case, divide the hair into sections and apply the product to each section, fingercombing the product through the hair for even distribution. If you struggle with obtaining definition to your curls, a styling aid such as Extra Butter Brilliant Shine Creme adds shine and helps define curls. I really like the the Extra Butter for creating amazing twist outs, bantu knots, braid outs and more on the HKH weaving extensions and wig units!
Curly Magic Curl Stimulator was my FAVORITE product I used on my wig unit. Curly Magic is an aloe based defining gel. After I washed my HKH wig using the Uncle Funky’s products, I styled my wig using the Curly Magic. You can definitely use the Extra butter in conjunction with the Curly Magic, however as an experienced Haute Kinky Hair beauty insider, I know HKH collections require moisture (i.e. water or conditioner) and little product. Too much product will cause HKH collections to mat and even weigh the hair down. So I decided to style using the Curly Magic because I’ve never styled my hair with a gel before! The Curly Magic definitely brought my curls back to life and added a great shine to my hair. My Haute Curls wig was bouncy and full of life all over again.
Maintaining Your Look
While you’re in the protective style, be sure to maintain your own natural hair by keeping it fresh and conditioned. Defunk Hair Refresher Tonic helps remove odor and keep the scalp clean while protective styling (which is what we are all about over here on the HKH team). You can also use Defunk after a day of exercising. Also, if you’re ever in a smokey area and smoke gets embedded in your hair (yuck), the Defunk will help eliminate those odors! Keeping your hair conditioned is important as well. Once you remove your wig unit each evening, simply spray your own natural hair with Midnite Train before heading to bed. This will give your hair moisture and conditioning overnight.
We choose to wear protective styles for a number of reasons. This choice may require a significant investment on our part, and we want to protect that investment by keeping our hair (our own hair and our wig unit) as healthy as possible.
