Aside from the usual, “What products do you use in your hair,” question, I also get a couple of follow-up questions that aren’t so short in response — Mainly styling questions. My hair is tightly coiled and absorbs moisture very well, but with my crazy routine, I typically opt for a twist out, protective style or wash & go. Uncle Funky’s Daughter products have helped me with these looks long before they became a bigger part of my life as President. I’m going to break down my wash & go routine for you guys as I’ve done with so many naturalistas to & ‘fro (in grocery stores, the mall and airports!).
Cleanse!
My first recommendation is to thoroughly cleanse your hair. Often times, the problem with achieving the perfect style isn’t execution, but product buildup! For a clarifying wash, I use our Squeaky Deep Cleansing Shampoo, but if I need to rid myself of some of the buildup but maintain moisture, I reach for our Bye-Bye Buildup Cleansing Conditioner (aka co-wash). I then condition with Richee Rich Moisturizing Conditioner, and prep my hair for styling.
Moisturize!
On soaking wet hair, I apply Thirsty Curls Leave-In Curl Revitalizer, which is a staple in my natural hair regimen. It starts the definition process for my curls, and contributes more moisture and shine to the style in the end (I also use it to refresh the style for the days after). Next I apply my holy grail moisturizer, Extra Butter Curl Forming Crème for definition, in conjunction with Supercurl Miracle Moisture Crème for extra shine and moisture. Crèmes are my favorite prep for styling because they don’t contain harsh chemicals or alcohols like mousses or setting sprays do.
Style!
Next, I apply a quarter-sized dollop of Curly Magic Curl Stimulator to each section of my hair. It is very important not to over-use Curly Magic (we get so many inquiries about that!), so I recommend adhering to the instructions on the bottle. Just remember, a little goes a long way!
I typically air dry my wash & go as I am finishing getting prepared for the day, but if you wish to use a diffuser, that’s completely okay! Once my hair dries, I apply Glossy Finishing Hair Polish and my style is complete!
