The summer humidity can be very intimidating for naturals trying to fight shrinkage. However, when you prep with the right products, humidity is a great source of moisture for our curls and can in fact promote healthy hair. Here are 3 tips for looking your best during the humid season.

1. Use moisturizing products!
I’ve learned that the key to looking my best during the summer is maintaining moisture in my hair. I used to think that summer was a free pass to not use a moisturizing cleanser, conditioner and styler but I was wrong! In the past, my hair would look extra dry and brittle because I neglected this. If you don’t provide moisturizing products to your hair when washing and styling, it will soak up all of the humidity and debris from the environment and as a result your curls will look very frizzy and dry.
I often use the moisturizing cleanser and hydrating conditioner from Uncle Funky’s Daughter to hydrate my curls before stepping out into the summer heat. With all of the excess moisture in the air, styling with a gel that has a good hold is key! I absolutely love Curly Magic by Uncle Funky’s Daughter! This product gives me the hold that I need to minimize flyaways and maintain curl definition.
2. Wear more updo hairstyles!
Updos are a must for me on a hot summer day because my curls are away from my back, neck and face. This helps my curls last a bit longer because I’m able to avoid sweating out a fresh wash. Even if you want to wear your hair down, I suggest bringing a clip or scrunchy with you so that you can do a quick bun or clipped up hairstyle. Messy buns are my go-to when I’m running low on time. It takes less than a minute for me to do my hair but people often think that I took at least 10 minutes to get the look. Don’t underestimate a quick updo!

3. Embrace the frizz!
When you have curly hair, frizz is inevitable and we must learn to embrace it. There is no magical product that will prevent frizz from happening. So don’t shy away from products such as Midnite Train and Thirsty Curls to freshen up your style during the week. What matters most is that your curls are strong and healthy. Love your hair in its natural state and try out different methods to get the look you are going for.
I hope that these tips for looking your best during the humid season were helpful. Remember to keep using moisturizing products, wear more updo hairstyles and embrace the frizz.
