My favorite season has always been the Fall due to the great weather, wonderful cozy scents, and outdoor activities. However, curly hair tends to suffer in the cooler weather and that will surely spark a change in your natural hair care routine. In order to get ahead of the curve, I created the ultimate natural hair care to-do list for the Fall!
1. Drink more water.
This can be a bit challenging when the temperature drops but drinking an adequate amount of water will help keep your hair moisturized. Doctors recommend we drink at least 8 glasses of water per day! The easiest way to know if you need more water in your system is to look at the color of your urine (yes I know “ew”) if it is darker in color you NEED more water!
2. Protect your hair.
Wearing your hair in a protective style is the easiest way to shield your hair from the upcoming weather changes. Some of my favorite low-tension protective styles are knotless braids, crochet locs, two-strand twists, clip-in extensions, halo twists, and braided ponytails. Keep in mind that the key to choosing the right protective style is making sure you have access to your scalp. Your hairstyle should not keep you from cleansing your scalp and moisturizing your hair.
3. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!
This is the most important part of your hair care to-do list for all seasons, especially the Fall! If you like to use the liquid, oil, and cream method (LOC), try the Midnite Train Leave-In Conditioner, then follow up with the Glossy Finishing Hair Polish by Uncle Funky’s Daughter. Glossy is amazing because it’s infused with safflower, jojoba, and coconut oil to strengthen and protect the hair. Lastly, apply their Extra Butter Curl Forming Crème. Not only does my hair love it but the whipped butter elongates and makes it easier to detangle my natural hair.
4. Deep condition every wash day.
I believe every wash day you should be deep conditioning your curls with a moisture-rich conditioner/masque. Heal & Renew from Uncle Funky’s Daughter is not only organic but a great hair masque for a deep treatment. I suggest adding a plastic cap and sitting under a hooded dryer so the masque can penetrate your hair shaft even more.
In conclusion, increasing the amount of moisture in your curls should be the theme of your natural hair care to-do list. Hopefully, these tips will help you prep your hair for the Fall as much as they help me!
