A beginner-friendly, low-manipulation hairstyle that can be worn throughout each season is the twist out. A twist out creates stunning wavy spirals that last a while. In this article, we will share steps to help you achieve your best twist out, resulting from two-strand twists.
A successful twist-out begins with a clean foundation.
Starting with clean hair will allow your hair to retain moisture and absorb the benefits of styling products. For a deep cleanse, add a clarifying shampoo to your wash day routine. Clarifying your hair unclogs hair follicles to ensure that your hair receives the proper hydration.
To do this, wash your hair with Uncle Funky’s Daughter (UFD) Squeaky Clarifying Cleanser which has ingredients like tea tree oil and willow bark. Tea tree oil helps to unclog hair follicles and stimulate hair growth. Willow bark helps to detoxify and exfoliate the scalp and hair follicles while providing moisture. Make sure to follow up with a hydrating conditioner, like UFD’s Richee Rich and the Heal & Renew Intensive Hair Masque.
Decide whether to install twists on damp or stretched hair.
There are two ways to install twists in preparation for a twist-out. The first way is to twist on wet to damp hair. This method can provide a juicier-looking twist. The downside of this method is that it takes hair longer to dry.
The second way to do twists is on hair that has been stretched. Doing twists on stretched hair allows you to minimize tangles and show off your length. Since hair is stretched, it is less prone to curl up on itself. Check out UFD’s Maximum Thermal Protection line to protect your hair while stretching it!
Select the best UFD styling product for your hair needs.
You can twist your hair using many different products. We recommend using either the Supercurl Miracle Moisture Crème or Extra Butter Curl Forming Crème. To boost moisture, you can apply the Midnite Train leave-in conditioner before applying your styling product. Another great option is the Curly Magic Curl Stimulator.
Before achieving a flawless twist out, you must have suitable twists.
How you twist your hair will directly affect the success of your twist out. Start with a detangled section of hair and separate it into two strands of the same size. Next, apply your UFD styling product from root to tip. Beginning at the root of your hair, start twisting the hair over and under each other in a downward motion until you reach the ends. Try not to borrow hair from other sections when twisting. Doing this can cause more frizz and uneven curl spirals during the takedown process. Also, remember to twist your hair in the same direction.
Pro tip: Add a small amount of styling product to the ends of your hair and twirl the bottom to create a curl. You can also use perm rods on the ends of your hair to create a flawless curl at the end of your twists. Doing this will provide a uniform curl at the ends of each section once your hair is untwisted.
Take down your twists to reveal your best twist out. Voila!
Wear twists until they are completely dry. Pro tip: Dry twists under a hooded dryer, which dries faster than air drying.
Gently untwist your twists, beginning at the end of each twist. If you are looking to achieve a twist out with more volume, further separate untwisted sections and use a pick to lift roots. If you are looking to achieve a twist out with more definition, opt for smaller twists.
I hope that these tips and techniques help you slay your next twist out! Don’t forget to maintain your twist out by wearing a satin or silk-lined bonnet or scarf while sleeping.
