I’ve been natural for years and managed to silk press my hair successfully multiple times without suffering from heat damage. It’s been a journey full of trial and error but I’ve finally gotten it down to a science. In this article, I’ll be giving you tips on how to achieve your best silk press at home.

Start on clean hair.
The first tip is to make sure your hair is thoroughly cleansed – this is where the Purifying Cleanser from the Maximum Thermal Protection (MTP) line comes in. Not only does it cleanse my hair strands but it also removes all buildup from my scalp which is very important to me. The cleaner the hair, the better!
After thoroughly cleansing, it’s important to fill your strands with moisture. I use the MTP Deep Conditioner because it adds just enough moisture to keep my hair hydrated while it is straight. One of the main reasons your hair may start to revert prematurely is the lack of moisture. As a result, your hair attempts to pull moisture from the atmosphere causing it to revert.

Protect your hair before using a heat tool.
Prior to blow drying my hair, I like to cocktail the MTP Primer and 3-in-1 Shine Booster! These products protect my hair from heat (up to 400 degrees) and give it an instant shine without a greasy feeling. Plus, a good heat protectant is key to protecting your hair, especially if you predominately wear your hair curly.
Pro tip: Allow your hair to set for a few hours after blow drying and prior to straightening. This allows your hair to fully absorb the products you applied and cool off before any additional manipulation.
After all of this preparation, I’m usually able to do one pass on my hair and I don’t apply any additional heat to my hair once the straightening process is complete.

For the past few years, I’ve used the Maximum Thermal Protection line by Uncle Funky’s Daughter and it has not failed me! The collection is simple to use and has everything you need to successfully heat style your hair. Also, similar to their other products, it has no harsh chemicals! Overall I 100% recommend these products if this cool breeze is enticing you to get a silk press on your natural hair. I hope these tips were helpful and inspired you to save your coin and slay your silk press at home!
