Summer is here, and it’s time to bask in the glorious sunshine and take a refreshing dip in the water. However, for those blessed with natural hair, the idea of taking a swim can often create a sense of unease. Worries about frizz, damage caused by saltwater or chlorine, and the ever-dreaded detangling process can turn swimming into an intimidating ordeal. But fear not! With proper care, you can enjoy swimming without compromising the health of your natural hair.

Care For Natural Hair When Swimming

1. Pre-Swim Prep

Before you head to the pool or beach, it’s crucial to prepare your hair for swimming. Start by thoroughly wetting your hair with clean water before entering the pool or ocean. This initial step ensures that your hair is already saturated, reducing the amount of chlorine or salt water it can absorb. Consider using our Midnite Train leave-in conditioner or Shining Star oil to create a protective barrier on your hair strands. This barrier will help prevent excessive absorption and minimize damage.

2. Opt For A Protective Hairstyle

Choosing the right hairstyle can make a significant difference in protecting your natural hair while swimming. Opt for styles that minimize exposure to water and friction. Braids, twists, buns, or updos are excellent options for keeping your hair secure and reducing tangling. For example, after wetting your hair and applying conditioner, you can two-strand twist or plait your hair and slick it into a tight bun. Another option is to go for protective styles with extensions such as box braids, Senegalese twists, etc. Just ensure that you have access to your scalp when choosing a protective style.

Additionally, wearing a swim cap can provide an extra layer of protection and keep your hair dry. Look for swim caps made specifically for natural hair, as they are often designed with extra space to accommodate thicker and longer hair textures.

3. Post-Swim Care

After swimming, rinse your hair thoroughly to remove any chlorine or saltwater residue. This step is crucial to preventing damage. Use a clarifying shampoo such as Squeaky from Uncle Funky’s Daughter to remove any additional residue from the hair and scalp. Once you’ve rinsed your hair, apply a deep conditioner such as Heal & Renew to restore moisture and nourish your strands. With the conditioner still on your hair, use a wide tooth comb or your fingers to gently detangle. Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots. Make sure your hair remains wet or damp while detangling to prevent breakage.

Swimming with natural hair doesn’t have to be a cause for worry. By following these essential tips, you can enjoy the water without compromising the health and beauty of your natural hair. Remember, each person’s hair is unique, so it may take some experimentation to find a routine that works best for you. Don’t be afraid to try different products and techniques to discover what keeps your natural hair strong and healthy while swimming.
