For Uncle Funky’s Daughter, this year’s Juneteenth feels especially meaningful as we kick off our Express Yourself campaign—a celebration of individuality, texture, style, and self-expression. Because at its core, Juneteenth is about freedom. And freedom creates space for us to express who we are.
The History of Juneteenth
On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring enslaved people in Confederate states legally free. Yet for many, freedom remained out of reach. More than two years later, on June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, announcing that enslaved African Americans were free.
This day became known as Juneteenth and has been celebrated for generations as a symbol of liberation, hope, and progress. What began in Texas has grown into a nationwide celebration of Black history, achievement, culture, and community.
Freedom and the Power of Self-Expression
The significance of Juneteenth extends beyond a historical moment. It serves as a reminder that freedom is not only about liberation from oppression—it’s also about having the ability to live authentically and express yourself fully.

Because no two textures are the same, no two journeys are the same. And no two expressions of beauty are the same.
Rooted in Texas, Inspired by Community
Juneteenth began right here in Texas. And today, Uncle Funky’s Daughter proudly calls Houston home. As a Black-owned brand rooted in the same state where this historic celebration began, we recognize the importance of honoring the legacy of those who came before us. We are continuing to create spaces where authenticity, confidence, and self-expression can thrive.
