How Often Should You Deep Condition Natural Hair?

As the weather changes, our natural hair needs do too. It might feel like deep conditioning every wash day will solve all your problems, but how often is enough? And how often is too much? Should deep conditioning be a step during every wash day?

As the air begins to dry and the weather cools, your curls need a different kind of care than they did all summer. It’s tempting to deep condition every wash day and call it done, but too much of a good thing can leave curls limp, while too little leaves them thirsty.

Cooler weather also tends to bring more heat tools back into the routine, whether that’s blow drying or flat ironing. That’s where Deep Conditioner – Maximum Thermal Protection comes in, giving curls a buffer right when they need it most. But the right deep conditioning frequency still comes down to your hair’s porosity, and pairing it with the right kind of protection. (Speaking of protection, if you haven’t already, take a look at our scalp detox post — a clean, balanced scalp makes everything you put on your curls work better.)

Low Porosity: Less Often, More Focused

Low porosity hair has tightly bound cuticles that resist moisture absorption, so product tends to sit on top rather than sink in.

This is you if your curls take a while to get wet and conditioner tends to build up instead of absorbing. Deep condition every 10 to 14 days. Apply to slightly damp hair and add gentle heat, like a warm towel, to help the cuticle lift and let product in.

Curls should feel soft, not coated. If your scalp starts feeling greasy or curls look weighed down, pull back on frequency.

Medium Porosity: Your Weekly Sweet Spot

Medium porosity cuticles let moisture in and out at a balanced rate, making this the most forgiving porosity to work with, though it still shifts with the season.

Most curl types fall here, especially through the heat-to-cold transition, when routines start needing a little more attention than they did in summer. A weekly deep condition, left on for 15 to 20 minutes, is usually enough to keep curls responsive as the air gets drier.

Curls should feel bouncy and defined between washes. If they start feeling dry a few days after washing, add a quick mid-week refresh.

High Porosity: More Frequent, More Sealing

High porosity cuticles are raised or gapped, so moisture escapes almost as fast as it comes in. That’s why hair can feel dry again soon after a deep condition.

This tends to show up in hair that dries out quickly, gets frizzy in cooler air, or has some heat or chemical history. Deep condition twice a week, and follow immediately with a leave-in or sealing step to lock that moisture in before it evaporates in the dry air.

Curls should hold moisture longer between washes. If they still feel brittle, ease up on heat styling before adding even more conditioning.

Bottom Line: How Often Should You Deep Condition?

If your porosity runs low, less frequent but more intentional deep conditioning serves you better than piling it on. If it runs high, your curls need that moisture replenished more often, with a sealing step to help it stick. Medium porosity sits comfortably in between, adjusting slightly as the season shifts.

Start by deep conditioning at the frequency that matches your porosity this week. Then notice how your curls feel by your next wash day and dial the frequency up or down from there.
