Type 4 Hair

Tiny “Z” shaped ringlets and shallow to deep “S” curls define this curl pattern. Coarse, densely packed, tightly coiled. Appears resilient but is actually very fragile. Won’t shine but can have sheen. May feel moisturized but not look it.

Tightly curled but has a visible curly-kinky texture.

4B

Kinky texture when dry, but is actually a looser curl pattern when wet. Very little visible curl defintion.

4C

Very tightly curled with a short, “Z” curl pattern. Texture remains tight or has even more shrinkage when wet. No visible curl definition.

Type 3 Hair

Stretched ,loose, loopy “S” curls, bouncy medium ringlets and tight corkscrew curls define this curl pattern. Lots of volume, fine texture. Commonly referred to as 3a, 3b and 3c curl patterns.

Stretched, loose, loopy “S” curls, broom stick circumference.

3B

Medium ringlets, bounces back easily to its original state when pulled.

3C

Tight corkscrew curls, the size of a straw. Very springy texture. Absorbs water easily.

Type 2 Hair

Stretched, medium and less defined “S” shaped waves define this curl pattern. Is flatter to head and won’t bounce. Commonly referred to as 2a, 2b, and 2c curl patterns.

2A

Texture is straight at the crown and becomes wavy with length.

2B

Wave length is approximately 1’. Very prone to frizz.

2C

Very large waves approximately 2’ – 3’ in length. Coarse, thick waves.
