About 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. According to statistics, in 2017, an estimated 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 63,410 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer.
Everyone knows at least one woman who has struggled with the disease, participated in a walk, donated or posted insightful information to raise awareness of the epidemic. It’s no secret what tolls breast cancer takes on patients mentally, emotionally and physically, and that one of the most daunting physical changes they endure is hair loss. We view our hair as our crowns of glory, and as women, we believe our hair is one of the traits that physically make up who we are or how others view us.
It is important for us to realize the severity of breast cancer and how important it is for us to have ourselves checked regularly via mammogram. A mammogram is a simple screening of the breasts to detect abnormalities such as lumps, pain or other symptoms of breast cancer. We are concerned about raising awareness because this disease is treatable and curable in the event that it is detected early. There is no determining factor on who is susceptible to breast cancer — no matter the age, race or bill of health, it could be you. It is a common statement from a breast cancer patient that: ‘She never thought it could be her.’
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Uncle Funky’s Daughter is committed to raising awareness and giving to those in need of support.
