Using the right hair products is GREAT, but having the right tools to help you along in your regimen makes a world of difference. A popular tool to use with UFD is the Q-Redew, a hair steaming gadget taking social media by storm that promotes healthy curls and the definition we all want! We sat down with Co-Founder, Heidi Schmid, to talk about some benefits of using it and the method behind the wonders of the Q-Redew.

What made you create this hair tool?

I had a curly hair problem, I invented a solution, and turned that solution into The Q-Redew — Like many women with naturally curly hair, I wanted great second, third, maybe even sixth day hair! The typical drill was to re-wet to refresh or restyle. I was in search of a better way. I have always loved solving problems, so this curly hair styling challenge stayed on my mind – how could I quickly and conveniently manipulate the hair without saturating it with water or causing damage?

The device’s makeup of releasing steam between these prongs to fit and mold your curls is super effective!

One day I had the “eureka” moment, a moment which sent me on my entrepreneurial path. STEAM! Yes, it dawned on me that steam would be the solution to quickly restyle, AND give me a nice dose of much-needed moisture.

What are the benefits and uses of the Q-Redew?

As every woman with naturally curly, coily, kinky hair can tell you, MOISTURE is the key to styling and maintaining the health of their glorious strands.

The Q-Redew gently releases a flow of steam between prongs. The prongs much like those found on a defuser, can be used to detangle or lift and separate the hair as desired and they provide a comfortable distance between steam and skin.

So what is the Q-Redew steam actually doing to the hair? The warm steam temporarily opens the cuticles of the hair shaft. In their normal state the cuticles lay flat like the singles on a roof. The naturally closed position can prevent even the most moisturizing products from penetrating the hair. When the cuticles are raised by the Q-Redew steam, moisture can penetrate the strand. Steaming while deep conditioning takes advantage of the open cuticle, especially when deep conditioning low porosity hair.

The Q-Redew alongside UFD products is a surefire combo to get your curls the definition you desire!

Q-Redew hair steaming is also fabulous for daily restyling. When the hair is warmed and softened by the steam, it can be with manipulated with ease and without damage. The hair strands in this moisturized, warm, soft, yet dry to the touch state, can be detangled, stretched to prepare for styling, plumped up, refreshed and reshaped. The list goes on for this multipurpose hair tool designed specifically for the hair care routine of natural hair.

What are some myths behind using a hair steamer?

The biggest myth regarding hair steaming is that heat may cause damage. Good news from Q-Redew — steam does not cause damage. Heat generating tools a blowdryer and flatiron use dry heat that pulls moisture out of the hair leaving the hair dry and prone to heat damage. The Q-Redew does just the opposite- it adds the much needed moisture to curly and kinky hair leaving the hair soft, shiny, and moisturized. The second myth to be debunked is that steam will not relax your texture. The steam will simply enhance what is already yours.

In addition to receiving all this awesome info, you have the chance to win your own Q-Redew — along with some awesome UFD products — in our 12 Days of Funk giveaway happening on Instagram right now! We’re definitely in a spirit of giving online; don’t miss out, and happy holidays!
