What do you think of when you hear the words natural hair routine? I used to get overwhelmed just thinking about it. Honestly, its nothing to stress over! Do you know what your hair likes? Do you know what your hair needs? The key to a hair routine is combining everything that your hair likes and needs and applying to your hair as necessary.

My morning routine really starts from my night time routine. How I wear my hair throughout the day, what I do to my hair before bed and how I sleep are key elements that will determine how much work my hair requires the next morning. If my hair is styled in a wash and go, the best practice is to keep my jumbo-sized bonnet on throughout the day, especially if I am staying home. Keeping my bonnet on allows me to keep my hands out of my hair and keeps my style fresh for a couple of days! If I want stretched and elongate curls the next morning, I like to put my hair in a pineapple with one hair tie and wrap it up with a satin scarf.
When getting ready for bed, I like to give myself a scalp massage to help me wine down and promote blood flow which encourages hair growth. If I have some time I like to make sure I lightly re-moisturize any parts that need it. This means I will wet any frizzy areas and add either product or a tiny bit of oil. Even if my hair is wet, I do not worry since the satin will keep my hair frizz free and intact. Some bedding materials I consider most important are a silk pillowcase, bonnet and scarf. Having a silk lined pillowcase is the foundation because it provides the ultimate protective layer if your bonnet or scarf comes off. These items are key to keeping your hair moisturized, in place and free from tangles for about 4-7 days. An additional tip: sleeping on a silk pillowcase keeps your skin from drying out and reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

My morning routine is very simple. I only need my spray bottle, hair oil and hair pick. When my hair is in a wash and go, the first thing I do is remove my bonnet. Next, I shake my hair to remove the mushroom shape my hair molded into overnight. Then I assess my hair to see what it needs. Sometimes it needs water. A little bit of water goes a long way in refreshing your curls, braids or twists since it activates the products already in your hair. If my hair does not need water I apply a small amount of oil to my hands, fluff and shape my hair. The last step is to use my hair pick and create a little volume. Then I’m off to slay my day!
