It’s finally summer and a lot of us are outside, after a long pandemic lockdown. What to do with our versatile hair is one topic that will definitely pop up in a lot of our minds. Today, I’m going to share with you some tips on how to take care of and style 4c natural hair during the summer.

Depending on where you live, it can get really hot during the summer and some places are more humid than others. Because of that, I personally love to keep my hair products lighter. I look for light weight, deep hydrating products. Uncle Funky’s daughter has a perfect combo with Thirsty Curls and Supercurl. Thirsty Curls is a water based leave-in spray/curl refresher and I cannot stress how important leave-in sprays are for 4c hair. They should be used daily to replenish or maintain moisture levels in our hair, especially if you live in a dryer climate. Supercurl is a deep hydrating moisturizer that softens your stands and adds a healthy shine. Both products have amazing ingredients and because they aren’t too thick, they do not cause excess build up which can actually prevent moisture from getting into your strands. Defunk is another great product to have as well, especially if you’re very active. It’s a scalp refresher that has plant extracts that neutralize odors and help to keep your scalp fresh and clean. It’s basically Febreeze for your scalp.

You want to make sure you’re cleansing and deep conditioning your hair as well. The UFD moisturizing cleanser properly cleans your hair without stripping it. It also contains ingredients that help heal and soothe your scalp. The Heal & Renew moisturizing deep conditioner infuses moisture into your hair, helps improve elasticity to reduce breakage and also soothes your scalp to increase blood flow. If you’re going on vacation, I got you too! UFD has a travel sized kit that contains all the products you need to do a full style and take care of your hair on the trip. The products come in a cute little pouch. You get Extra Butter, Super curl, Thirsty Curls, Midnight Train and Curly Magic. What more can you ask for?

When it comes to hair styling, my favorite styles for the summer are twists; loose twists, flat twists, mini twists, you name it. Twists are a great versatile protective style. You can be very creative with your twists, feel free to add in extra braiding hair for more length and volume. They’re also great for vacations. I have a ton of loose twist tutorials on my youtube channel in case you need some inspiration. Also, if you don’t know how to flat twist, there’s a new technique going around that’s super easy and gives a nice clean flat twist look. It’s called needle and thread flat twisting. Summer time is when you should really have fun and experiment with your hair. Step out of your comfort zone. Try color, if you don’t want to use permanent chemicals, try hair paint wax. Just remember it’s your hair, you can do whatever you want with it as long as you’re taking care of it.
