Why Do I Have More Than One Curl Pattern?

  • October 22, 2026

One section coils tightly. Another hangs a little looser. The front behaves completely differently from the back.

Sound familiar?

Having more than one curl pattern on the same head is incredibly common. Your texture does not have to fit neatly into one number or letter, and understanding those differences can make styling a lot easier.

Why Can Curl Patterns Be Different?

Your curl pattern is influenced by the shape of your hair follicle, genetics, and how the strand grows from your scalp.

Because follicles are not identical across your entire head, different sections can naturally produce different curl shapes.

That means you might have:

  • Looser curls around the front
  • Tighter coils near the crown
  • More shrinkage in one section
  • Areas that need more moisture or hold than others

None of that means something is wrong with your hair.

Your Hair History Matters Too

Natural variation is only part of the story.

Heat styling, color, chemical treatments, tension, and everyday manipulation can also change how certain sections behave. If one area suddenly looks much looser than it used to, pay attention to whether that section has experienced more heat or stress.

The goal is not to make every curl identical. It is to notice changes in your own hair over time.

One Head of Hair Can Need More Than One Technique

This is where knowing your hair becomes more useful than simply knowing your curl type. The section that dries fastest may need more moisture.

The looser section may need less product. The tighter section might benefit from working in smaller sections or adding more water during styling.

A refresher like Thirsty Curls can help target areas that need an extra moisture boost without requiring you to completely restart your style.

Definition Does Not Have to Mean Uniformity

Sometimes we expect a good wash-and-go to make every curl look exactly the same.

It does not have to.

Curly Magic can help enhance definition and hold, but the goal should be to support the curl pattern you already have, not force every section into one shape.

Your texture can be defined and still be diverse.

Learn Your Sections

The easiest way to understand multiple curl patterns is to stop treating your hair like one single zone.

During your next wash day, notice:

  • Which sections absorb water fastest?
  • Where do you experience the most shrinkage?
  • Which areas lose definition first?
  • Where does your hair feel driest?
  • Which sections need more or less product?

You may find that small adjustments work better than completely changing your routine.

The Bottom Line

Your curl pattern does not need to fit neatly into one category. Different textures, levels of shrinkage, and styling needs can all exist on the same head of hair. Instead of trying to make every curl behave the same way, learn what each section needs.

Curl question: How many different curl patterns do you notice on your head?
